Keys to confident and effective parent participation in the special education process A Family Handbook A Publication of the Parent Information Center Revised February 2001 Introduction to the Keys Handbook Raising children is challenging in the best of circumstances. For a family that has a child with disabilities the challenges can be overwhelming. Having knowledge, support and information can be the key to allowing families to participate confidently and effectively in their child's special education program, as well as all of those other activities of life. Families who have children with disabilities are first of all families -- they face the same stresses that other families face -- plus the additional ones related to the child's disability. In order to be their child's best advocate, families need information. They need to know about their child's rights -- and about their own rights and responsibilities -- under special education law, and they need problem-solving skills and support. This booklet is an overview of the information families need to be strong advocates for their child. Remember: You know the most about your child. You can contribute important information to your child's educational plan. As your child's parents/family, you are the most important and consistent people in your child's life. You can be the key to an effective and appropriate educational program for your child, as well as to his or her happy and successful future.
