Who We Are

The Parent Information Center (PIC), a project of Parents Helping Parents of Wyoming Inc., opened in August, 1991 as one of the nationwide network of nonprofit, Parent Training and Information Centers (PTI's) funded by the United States Department of Education. Our first responsibility is to inform and educate parents about special education law and the rights and responsibilities they and their child have under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

The main goals and purposes of PIC are to help families better understand education issues as they relate to their child's disability, and to provide support and encouragement to parents as they face their child's journey through life.

PIC's services are available to parents of children, age birth to 21, with any type of disability or chronic health need. Because of the large areas and sparse population of Wyoming, there are generally not enough people in any one community to sustain a special interest group of families dealing with one particular disability. The support, activities and workshops sponsored by PIC are for all families and children who are facing the challenges of any kind of disability or chronic illness.

What We Do

We become as well informed as possible about the law, education, medicine, human services, rehabilitation and technology so that the parents and professionals to whom we provide information, referral and support have access to the best information available.

We share information and support with each other and parents who are faced with disabilities and chronic illnesses so that together we can make a difference for our children.

What We Believe

Parents of children with disabilities need information about the specific disabilities which they face, about special education law, and about the development of their child's IEP, as well as support and encouragement as they face the everyday joys and challenges of raising children with disabilities.

Parents are the most valuable resource for their children. All schools, workplaces and communities should be inclusive to the fullest extent possible.

Parents must have support and information so they can participate in making decisions about their child's educational program.

Parents' most important tools in dealing with educators, administrators and other professionals are communication and collaboration.

Persons with disabilities must have access to the education and technology necessary to participate fully in community life.

Services must be individualized to meet the unique needs of each child and family.

Age appropriate community recreational opportunities should be available for all children and adults.

Families must be empowered and supported so they can nurture their children in the home.

Parents, professionals and communities must have high expectations for individuals who are challenged by disability or illness.

Individuals and the press should use language about people with disabilities which is respectful and recognizes their dignity and rights as full citizens.
