A free handbook published by PIC and the Wyoming Department of Education to help parents become confident and effective participants in the special education process.

Disability Brochures

PEN Notes are a series of fact sheets on strategies and tips on typical parenting issues that affect our families.

  1. Why Call PIC - This brochure explains the role of the Parent Information Center in helping you as a parent of a child with a disability.
  2. Asperger Syndrome - Characteristics & Coping Strategies Topics include: What is Asperger Syndrome? Common Characteristics of Asperger Syndrome, How is Asperger Syndrome Diagnosed? and Helpful Strategies for Parents and Teachers.
  3. Attachment Disorder - This brochure describes the characteristics of attachment disorder in children of different ages and provides information on ways parents can help.
  4. Attention Disorders - Characteristics & Coping Strategies for Families The brochure explains ADD/ADHD, their primary and secondary characteristics; strategies for dealing with the characteristics of ADD/ADHD, what to do if you think your child has ADD/ADHD and other available resources.
  5. Autism Autism - Characteristics and Coping Strategies Information includes: What is Autism? Common Characteristics of Autism; What Causes Autism and How is it Diagnosed? Effective Strategies for Optimal Learning for an Autistic Child.

  6. Brain Injury - The brochure provides information on causes and characteristics of brain injury, how it is diagnosed and helpful strategies for parents and teachers.
  7. Down Syndrome - Characteristics and Coping Strategies Families learn what Down Syndrome is and it's features and characteristics, strategies for parents, and further resources.
  8. Dyslexia - Dyslexia is a learning difference characterized by problems in expressive or receptive, oral or written language. Topics include common signs, evaluation information and tips on what parents can do to help.
  9. Educational Surrogate Parents - An Educational Surrogate Parent is an individual who has been appointed to represent the educational interests of a child with disabilities, when the parent is unable or unwilling to do so.
  10. Extended School Year - This brochure explains extended school year services as required by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

  11. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) - Characteristics & Coping Strategies for Families Families learn what FAS is and its characteristics. Also included are strategies for working with children who have FAS; strategies for managing unpredictable behaviors; teaching strategies for optimal learning and what to do if you think your child has FAS.

Learning Disabilities - Tips and Coping Strategies for Parents You will get information on what a learning disability is; common characteristics of learning disabilities; how to find "Further Examination;" what to do if your child does not qualify for special education; how you can help your child at home and in social situations.
  13. Natural Environments - The Places Where Young Children Learn Best This brochure explains Part C of 1997 Amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act concerning the clause "services are to provided in natural environments."
  14. Planning for a Successful Life - Transition Tips for Parents Topics include: Age of Majority, Guardianship, Sex Education, Selective Service, Transportation, Graduation, Adult Services, and Funding.
  15. Looking to the Future: Estate Planning Estate Planning is one of the most critical and important issues families of children or adult with disabilities face. Topics in this brochure include Letter of Intent and Special Needs Trust.

  17. Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973 You will learn the purpose of Section 504; how to identify a qualified disability and physical or mental impairments; what Section 504 means for a child with a disability, and what to do if you think your child is being discriminated against.
  18. Seizure Disorder & Epilepsy - Characteristics and Coping Strategies for Families The information includes what a seizure is, characteristics of seizures, handling seizures, learning problems for children with seizures, treatment options and other considerations.
  19. Sensory Disorder- All of the information children receive from their environment comes through the sensory systems. If one or more of the sensory systems do not function properly, the child cannot interact successfully with the surrounding environment or other people. This brochure helps to explain the interactions between the sensory systems and what families can do to help their children.
  20. Shaken Baby Syndrome - Topics include: What is shaken baby syndrome, symptoms, causes, and diagnosis.

  22. Tourette Syndrome - Tourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by tics (involuntary movements or vocalizations.) This brochure has information about recognizing the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment, and what parents can do to help.
  23. You are Not Alone on the Emotional Roller Coaster- When you Learn that Your Child has a Disability or Special Health Need Information includes feelings that most parents feel the moment their life changes and some things that help them cope.

What is PHP of Wyoming, Inc.?

Parents Helping Parents of Wyoming, Inc is a private, non-profit organization founded in 1990. Governed by a board of directors, the majority who are parents or family members of children with disabilities, PHP 's mission is to provide a means of communication, cooperation, and education to parents and professionals who wish to serve and support children with and without disabilities. We aim to help families become more active in their children's learning and education, and obtain better programs and services through education, support, and referral.
