| Their World - 1994 | LD | 26 |
| Millions of children and adults across the US suffer from learning disabilities (LD). Believed to be neurological in origin, learning disabilities interfere with an individual's ability to store, process or produce information. Because it is often a "hidden handicap," learning disabilities are not easily recognized, accepted or considered serious. LD can affect one's ability to read, write, speak, or compute math, and can impede socialization skills. Learning disabilities create a gap between a person's true capacity and his or her day-to-day performance. Early diagnosis and appropriate intervention and support are critical for the individual with LD. Without early detection and intervention, LD can lead to a complete loss of self-esteem and, consequently, school dropout, substance abuse, juvenile delinquency, illiteracy and other serious problems. This publication focuses on a number of important issues as well as research findings affecting the lives of of individuals with LD and their families - from the benefits of early intervention to the myriad social and emotional factors involved. |

| Total Concentration: How to Understand Attention Deficit Disorders | ADD | 12 |
| All of us at one time or another have experienced concentration problems, usually accompanied by distractibility, memory uncertainty, moodiness, impulsivity, and restlessness. For most of us, these psychosomatic-like symptoms are temporary. And if they persist in a mild form, they can usually be minimized or eliminated by getting adequate rest, exercise, and improved diet. But there are well over 20,000,000 Americans who suffer ongoing or severe and disabling impairments of concentration - a medically-recognized physiological condition of heretofore unknown origin called Attention Deficit Disorder or ADD. Because only the severest and most obvious cases are recognized, the vast majority of ADD sufferers go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. And all too often they are mislabeled as merely disinterested, "spacy", lazy, hyper, or retarded. Many are predisposed to giving-up or acting-out via self-destructive or anti-social behavior. The cost both in human and financial terms is staggering. Dr. Levinson's research on ADD and related learning disorders, spanning 25 years and involving 20,000 patients, has solved many perplexing riddles characterizing disordered concentration. Specifically, ADD was traced to an inner-ear dysfunction which secondarily disrupts interconnecting concentration and alerting centers of the brain. And 80% of cases were found to respond favorably to combinations of antimotion-sickness antihistamines and stimulants - similar to those used by astronauts during space flights. Additionally, five distinct types of concentration disorders were delineated - each with a unique origin and each responding best to specific forms of treatment. In this book, all these and many other vital diagnostic and holistic therapeutic insights are clearly and simply presented, using scores of case histories for illustration. It is anticipated that these insights will enable all with disordered concentration to be helped and that a majority will attain their maximum potential - total concentration. |

Dr. Brazelton uses them as windows to help parents understand their child's behavior and prevent future problems. Part One: "Touchpoints of Development" is a vivid chronological account of the basic stages of early childhood. Part Two: "Challenges to Development" is a complete alphabetical reference.
