| Sensory Integration and the Child | SI | 01 |
| About 30 years ago, A. Jean Ayres, working as an occupational therapist with neurologically disabled children and adults, began to realize that the weak muscles and poorly coordinated hands and legs of these clients were not always their most severe handicaps. Some children could not put puzzles together, had trouble learning to dress themselves, and were unable to pay attention to any task longer than a few minutes. They experienced great difficulty with school work as well. Learning how to use simple tools of the kitchen presented problems for women. Men were so slow at assembling a two- or three-piece toy that they could find employment only in a sheltered workshop. These problems suggested a visual perception disorder to Dr. Ayres, who undertook to determine what was not working well in the brain and to search for a solution to the problem. She focused her efforts on children with perceptual, learning, and behavior problems that could not be attributed to known causes. Her approach differed from that of other professionals She believed that the best answers would be found in a better understanding of how the brain processes sensations - from not only the eyes and ears but other parts of the body as well. Dr. Ayres' research has yielded some of the answers. She has demonstrated that occupational therapy can help some children who have sensory processing or integrative problems to achieve more in school and feel better about themselves. One persistent obstacle, however, has been the difficulty that parents, teachers, and other professionals experience in recognizing sensory integrative dysfunction and realizing that something can be done about it. |
